Background of the Study
Media plays a crucial role in informing and educating voters about the political process, candidates, and key issues in elections. In Sokoto South Local Government Area (LGA), Sokoto State, media coverage of elections has become increasingly important in shaping voter awareness and engagement (Kassim & Hassan, 2024). Various forms of media, including television, radio, newspapers, and social media, are used to communicate political messages and news, with significant implications for voter behavior and participation. The rise of digital media and social platforms has changed the media landscape, allowing for more widespread dissemination of information (Abdullahi & Jibrin, 2023). However, despite the media's potential to increase voter awareness, the impact of media coverage on voter engagement in Sokoto South remains a subject of debate, as access to media, media literacy, and the accuracy of the information disseminated all vary significantly across different voter groups (Salman & Sani, 2025). This study will investigate the effect of media coverage on voter awareness in Sokoto South, focusing on how media influences voter knowledge, political participation, and decision-making.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite widespread media coverage of electoral processes, voter awareness in Sokoto South LGA remains limited in some areas. While media outlets have the potential to educate voters, disparities in access to media platforms, particularly in rural areas, may affect the impact of media on voter awareness (Olaoye & Bello, 2024). This study will assess how different types of media coverage influence voter knowledge and participation in Sokoto South LGA, exploring the factors that affect the effectiveness of media in increasing voter awareness.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the effect of media coverage on voter awareness in Sokoto South Local Government Area.

  2. To examine the role of different media platforms in shaping voter knowledge and participation.

  3. To evaluate the challenges faced by voters in accessing reliable media coverage during elections in Sokoto South LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. What is the impact of media coverage on voter awareness in Sokoto South Local Government Area?

  2. Which media platforms have the most significant influence on voter knowledge and participation in Sokoto South?

  3. What are the challenges faced by voters in accessing media coverage during elections in Sokoto South LGA?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Media coverage significantly increases voter awareness in Sokoto South Local Government Area.

  2. Television and social media platforms have the most significant influence on voter knowledge and participation in Sokoto South.

  3. Limited access to media and misinformation negatively affect voter awareness in Sokoto South LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will shed light on the role of media coverage in enhancing voter awareness and political participation in Sokoto South. The findings will be valuable for media outlets, political parties, and civic organizations seeking to improve voter engagement and ensure informed decision-making during elections. Additionally, it will contribute to the broader understanding of how media influences electoral outcomes in Nigeria.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the impact of media coverage on voter awareness in Sokoto South LGA, primarily examining the 2023 elections. It will analyze the role of television, radio, print media, and social media in shaping voter knowledge. A limitation of the study is the potential for bias in media coverage, as media outlets may have political affiliations that influence their content.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Media Coverage: The reporting, broadcasting, and dissemination of information related to political events, candidates, and issues through various media channels.

  • Voter Awareness: The level of knowledge and understanding that voters have about the electoral process, candidates, and key political issues.
